Buffalopox

Buffalopox is a viral disease caused by Buffalopox virus (BPXV), it is a Poxviridae. That can affect humans and is primarily spread to humans through contact with infected animals. In humans the virus causes lesions that are mainly confined to the hands, forehead, face, buttocks, and legs, and occasionally lymphadenopathy.

 

 
 

What is Buffalopox?

Buffalopox is caused by Buffalopox virus (BPXV), it is a Poxviridae. The natural host is buffalo, they are known to infect cows and humans too. These infects are sporadic and epidemic usually seen in domestic and commercial farm settings.

Who is more Prone to get affected by Buffalopox?

Humans who are in proximity to infected hosts (Buffalo). The milk attendants may also get infected.

What are the causes of Buffalopox?

Usually, close contact with an infected host causes Buffalopox.

What is the incubation period of the Buffalopox virus?

The incubation period in animals is 2-4 days and 3-19 days in humans.

What are the signs and symptoms of Buffalopox?

Usually, a mild form of the disease exists, it is very rare to find a severe form.
In mild form: – The febrile illness with vesicular lesions is localized usually in the inguinal region hands, forearms, over the parotid and found in the base or inner surface of ears and eyes. It is occasionally accompanied by lymphadenopathy. Severe Malaise is also seen.
In severe form: -The lesions are generalized and can result in high morbidity.

What are the investigations of Buffalopox?

The lesion samples are taken via swab test and electron microscopy. The PCR (Polymerase chain reaction) test is also done.

What treatment is advised for Buffalopox?

Broad-spectrum antibiotics along with antiseptic dressing on the affected lesions.

What is the prognosis of Buffalopox?

Usually, the mild form exists, but rarely the severe form is seen. The prognosis is good.

What are the complications of Buffalopox?

The complication is Necrotic tissue formation usually occurs in a few cases.

What is the differential diagnosis of Buffalopox?

-Cowpox disease

What management is helpful for Buffalopox?

-Wearing gloves while milking and handling is an effective management.
-Treating the infected host also reduced chances of further sporadic or epidemic spread.
