What is Piles or Hemorrhoid?

A piles is a disease of veins. Piles are collections of inflamed tissue in the anal canal. It is also known as hemorrhoids.

It is also known as swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum, similar to varicose veins.

What are the causes of Piles?

  • These are the following:
  • Patient suffering from chronic constipation.
  • Diet rich in fiber content.
  • In the case of pregnant women, it also causes piles.
  • Over straining on bowels and this straining lead to swelling of veins.
  • Patient having the family history.
  • Due to the sedentary lifestyle.
  • Due to poor muscle tone in rectal region.

How many types of Piles?

There are two types of hemorrhoids. These are:

External Piles- 

  • This type of piles is present under the skin around the anus.
  • It is a painful to type of piles and causes itching.

Internal Piles -

  • This type of piles is present inside the mucous.
  • Sometimes these are painless but also may painful in sometimes.
  • This type of piles causes bleeding only on bowel (intestine) movement.
  • These type of piles in advance stages causes prolapse of rectum.

  • Painless bleeding but in some cases, pain may present and it depends upon person to person.
  • Pain while the passage of stools.
  • Itching  around anus.
  • Swelling around the anal area.
  • Patient feel a lump in the anus.
  • Soreness in the anus.
  • Dull pain in the anal region.

What foods irritate hemorrhoids?

Some foods with little fiber  content can cause or make constipation.

Less physical activity.

Fried and spicy food also responsible for this and causes swelling of the anus.

What are the complications of piles?

  • Peri-anal thrombosis.
  • Anemia.
  • Fecal incontinence.
  • Anal fistula.

What is the differential diagnosis of piles?

  • Ulcerative colitis.
  • Crohn Disease.
  • Rectal Prolapse

How to investigate the case of piles?

  • Patient history.
  • Family history.
  • Physical examination of the patients.
  • Rectum examination done for internal piles.
  • Colonoscopy.
  • Colon sigmoidoscopy

What is the dietary management is required?

The good intake of watery fruits.

  1. Diet rich in high fiber content.
  2. Regular exercise.
  3. Avoid straining the stool.
  4. Avoid coffee and alcohol.
  5. Keep body hydrated by taking a lot of water.
