Parkinson’s Disease: A Progressive Senile Movement Disorder

Parkinson disease is one of the most common neurological disorder causing progressive disability that can be slowed down but not impeded.

Parkinson’s disease symptoms include tremors, muscle rigidity, slow movement, and impaired balance and coordination known as postural instability.

The incidence and prevalence of Parkinson disease increase with age and the average age of onset are approximately 60 years.

Causes  of Parkinson’s disease:

In Parkinson’s disease, certain nerve cells (neurons) in the brain gradually break down or die. Many of the symptoms are due to a loss of neurons that produce a chemical messenger in your brain called dopamine. When dopamine levels decrease, it causes abnormal brain activity, leading to signs of Parkinson’s disease.

Initial clinical symptoms in Parkinson disease include the following:

•Tremor or shaking at rest, involving the thumb, entire hand, arm, chin, lips, and feet

•A gradual decrease in performing skills: example, a lack of coordination with activities such as playing golf or dressing due to rigidity

•Dystonia in Parkinson disease commonly consists of a foot involuntary turning in or down often associated with cramping or aching in the leg.

•Bradykinesia (lack of movement or slowness of movement) when walking or swinging an arm

•Postural instability, making it necessary to hold onto something to maintain balance when walking or rising from a chair.

Other non-motor symptoms are:

•Soft voice

•Decreased facial expression

•Sleep disturbances

•Decreased sense of smell

•A general feeling of weakness, malaise, or lassitude

•Depression

•Slowness in thinking

Diagnosis of the disease:

There’s no specific test to diagnose Parkinson’s disease.

No laboratory or imaging study is required in patients with a typical presentation. Such patients are aged 55 years or older and have a slowly progressive and asymmetric parkinsonism with resting tremor and bradykinesia or rigidity.

Treatment :

The goal of medical management of Parkinson disease is to provide control of signs and symptoms for as long as possible while minimizing adverse effects.

The homoeopathic approach in the case of Parkinson’s disease:

Homeopathy offers help in cases of Parkinson’s disease by controlling the symptoms and ceasing the further progression of the disease.

Some medicines like Merc Sol, zinc met, Rhus Tox. etc act well in cases of Parkinson it is recommended that before taking any medication to consult the homoeopathic physician. Never do self-medications as every case has its own remedy.
