The occurrence of melasma is believed to be triggered by birth control pills, pregnancy, hormonal replacement therapy, family history, sensitive skin that is more prone to pigmentation after sun exposure. Melasma during pregnancy is believed to occur due to high level of progesterone. If a woman receives progesterone hormone replacement therapy she is more at risk to develop melasma.
