What is folate?
Folate is necessary to make red blood cells. It also helps in repairing cells and making DNA. The source of folate is green leafy vegetables, fruits, liver, kidney and to a lesser extent, muscle meats, cereals and milk. The average daily requirement is 100-200μg.

What is folate, red cell test?
RBC folate test measures the vitamin B9 in individual RBCs and is also called folic acid.
Red cells contain 20-50 times more folate than the serum; thus red cells folate assay is a more reliable indicator of tissue stores of folate than serum folate assay.
What are the indications for folate testing?
- This test is used to done to detect megaloblastic anaemia and hypersegmented neutrophils.
- To check the folate deficiency.

- Children: Over 160 ng/mL (over 362 nmol/L)
