What is amylase?

It is a protein found in the blood or urine, made by the pancreas and the salivary glands. It plays a great role in the breakdown and digestion of carbohydrates.

What is the serum amylase test?

It measures the amount of amylase present in the blood or urine.

What is the serum amylase test used for?

This test is used to diagnose the disorders of the pancreas, including any infection, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), gallstones and many more conditions.

What is the normal range of serum amylase?

The units of measurement of serum amylase are U/L (units per litre) in a blood sample.

The normal range is between 30 – 110 U/L.

Why should I get this test done?

If you have a pancreatic disorder and the symptoms like:

  • Pain in the upper abdomen which gets worse after eating

What does high serum amylase indicate?

High serum amylase in blood or urine may indicate:

  • Acute pancreatitis

  • A benign tumour of the pancreas
What does low serum amylase indicate?

Low serum amylase in blood or urine is very uncommon and if it happens, it indicates:

  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Pre-eclampsia
