What is albumin?

Albumin is a protein that keeps intravascular fluids inside vessels and prevents leakage. It is synthesized in the liver.

What is a serum albumin test?

A serum albumin test is done to quantify the albumin in the circulation.

What is the normal value of serum albumin?

The normal value of serum albumin is 3.4-5.4 g/dl.

Why albumin test is done?

An albumin test is usually done to rule out liver or kidney disease. It also helps rule out some nutrition deficiencies, especially decreased protein in the diet.

What are the indicative symptoms of liver disease?
  • Diminished appetite
  • Yellowish discolouration of skin and sclera

  • Bruises

What does high serum albumin indicate?

Higher serum albumin indicates dehydration of the body which can be caused by vomiting, diarrhoea and decreased intake of water.

Abnormal albumin doesn’t mean that you have any serious medical health condition.

It can be high due to not eating meals properly, or if you are on any medication like steroids, hormones, insulin etc.

What does low serum albumin indicate?

Lower albumin can be caused by :

  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Malnutrition
  • Thyroid disease
  • GIT disorders like Crohn’s disease and malabsorption disorder.
