What is parathyroid hormone (PTH)?

It is a hormone, also known as parathormone (PTH) released from the parathyroid glands, four pea-sized glands lying behind the thyroid gland in the neck.

What is the role of parathyroid hormone (PTH)?
  • It helps maintain the level of calcium in the blood. Calcium is the mineral necessary for teeth and bone strength. It also plays a role in the proper functioning of muscles, nerves, and the heart.
  • It also controls the level of phosphorus and Vitamin D in the blood.
What is the normal range of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the blood?

The normal range of PTH in the blood is 14 – 65 pg/ml.

What is it used for?

PTH test is done to check for:

  • Hypoparathyroidism – a condition with a low PTH level
  • Hypoparathyroidism – a condition with a high PTH level
  • The cause of abnormal calcium levels in the blood
  • Monitor the kidney disease
Why is the PTH test done?

You need to get it done if there is a change in your blood calcium level.

The symptoms of high blood calcium level are as follows:

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Easily breakage of bones
  • Bone pains
  • Kidney stones
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion

The symptoms of low blood calcium level are as follows:

  • Muscle twitching/cramps
  • Tingling in fingers or toes
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Dry skin
  • Brittle nails
What does a high parathyroid hormone (PTH) level indicate?

A high level of parathyroid hormone in the blood may indicate:

  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Poor calcium intake
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Parathyroid gland tumor
  • Impaired calcium absorption from food
  • Pseudohypoparathyroidism- a condition when the body doesn’t respond to PTH
What are the preparations to be done before the test?

A woman who is undergoing the test needs to avoid the usage of vaginal creams and douches 24 hrs before the test. But if a urine test is to be done then urine should not be voided for 1-2 hrs before the test for both men and women.

What does low parathyroid hormone (PTH) level indicate?

A low level of parathyroid hormone in the blood may indicate:

  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • Overdose of calcium
  • Excessive vitamin D intake
  • Injury to the parathyroid gland
  • Cancer that has spread to bones
