What is an MCV test?

MCV test stands for Mean Corpuscular volume test which is used to measure the average size of the RBCs. RBCs carry oxygen to all the organs of the body, so any abnormality in the size of RBCs is an indication of certain blood disorders.

What is the normal value of MCV?

In adults, it is 80-100 fL. However, its range may vary according to age and sex.

What is the use of MCV blood test?

It is performed to know any abnormality in the RBCs and helps to diagnose Certain blood disorders and anaemia.

What symptoms are indicative of the MCV test?

What does a low MCV level indicate?

When the MCV level is lower than normal, this means that the size of RBCs is small and may be suggestive of the following health conditions:

  • Iron deficiency anaemia can be due to blood loss, pregnancy, reduced iron absorption or dietary deficiencies.
  • Thalassemia
What does a high MCV level indicate?

A higher MCV level means there is an increase in the size of RBCs, indicating the following:

  • Pernicious anaemia can be due to vitamin B12 deficiencies or certain autoimmune diseases, celiac disease or Crohn’s disease.
  • Anaemia due to folic acid deficiency
  • Liver disease
Is there anything to be done before the test?

There is no special preparation to be done before it. Also, there is no need to fast for several hours before the test.

Is there any risk related to the MCV test?

There is no risk related to it. But there might be slight bruising at the site from where blood is drawn which might go away
