What is Lactic Acid?

Lactic acid is a substance body produces by the breakdown of glucose under anaerobic conditions. It is also known as lactate. It is mainly present in the muscle cells and red blood cells. Normally, lactic acid is low in range.

What does a high lactic acid indicate?

If the levels of lactic acid are higher than normal then the condition is called lactic acidosis. The levels may increase when the oxygen levels decrease. The cause of high lactic acid depends upon the two different types, type A and type B.

Type A lactic acidosis:

  • Sepsis
  • Shock
  • Heart failure
  • Lung disease
  • Anaemia

Type B lactic acidosis:

  • Liver disease
  • Leukaemia
  • Kidney disease
  • Strenuous exercise
What does a low lactic acid indicate?

Normally the lactic acid in the blood is lower in range. It causes nothing to the person.
