What is the dengue NS1 antigen test?
This test detects the dengue NS1 antigen. This NS1 antigen can be detected as soon as 24 hours and up to the 9 days onset of symptoms. This test can diagnose the acute phase or primary and secondary infection of dengue.
The two main types of dengue fever blood tests:
- Antibody tests – It detects the antibodies IgM and IgG produced by the immune system when the person has been exposed to the virus. This test is more effective and performed after four days of exposure.
- Molecular tests – This is the PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test to detect the genetic material of the dengue virus in the blood. This test is done within the first week after the symptoms appear (fever). Four different stereotypes of the dengue virus cause the infection.

What is the reference range of NS1 antigen?
In the acute phase, serum ranges from 0.5 – 2 g/mL
In the convalescent-phase serum is less than 0.04 g/mL
Why is a dengue test done?
A dengue test is done to:

What does dengue NS1 positive mean?
The dengue NS1 is positive then it indicates the dengue virus infection but does not reveal the stereotype. A person who has a negative NS1 test should be tested for dengue IgM antibodies to check if he/she has recently been exposed to the virus.
