What it is?

The antinuclear antibody (ANA) test is used to evaluate a person for autoimmune disorders that affect many tissues and organs throughout the body (systemic) and it is help to diagnose systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)as sometimes referred to as connective tissue or collagen diseases) mixed connective tissue disease, Sjögren syndrome, scleroderma, CREST syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyositis.

What does it mean when ANA is positive?

Positive result may mean that you have an autoimmune disease such as SLE.However positive ANA test does not mean patient have SLE.

The ANA test result can also be positive in such conditions :

-Raynaud’s syndrome

-Thyroid diseases

-Grave’s disease

-Liver diseases- autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis

-Inflammatory bowel disease
