What is an epinephrine serum test?

Epinephrine is a catecholamine also called adrenaline and is a test used to measure adrenaline secretion in the blood serum.

What is adrenaline?

It is a hormone secreted by adrenal glands and also from some of the neurons of the nervous system. It is also called a fight hormone which is secreted during stressful situations.

Why is this test done?

This test is done due to the following reasons where the following are suspected:

  • Dysfunctioning of adrenal glands
  • Addison’s disease
  • Adrenal hyperplasia
  • Cushing’s syndrome
  • Adrenal adenoma
  • Ganglioneuroma tumour
What is the normal value of it?

The normal adrenaline level in the blood is from 0- 900 pg/ml

What are the preparations to be done before the test?

Samples are collected either in the form of blood samples or urine samples at specific times of the day.
