What is activated partial thromboplastin time ( APTT)?

This test is used to measure the intrinsic system factors ( VIII, IX, XI and XII) and factors common to both intrinsic and extrinsic systems ( factors X, V, prothrombin and fibrinogen).

What is the normal value of activated partial thromboplastin time?

The normal range of activated partial thromboplastin time is 30-40 seconds.

Why is the activated partial thromboplastin test done?
  • This test is usually done in patients who are taking heparin.
  • The test is usually done if someone is scheduled for surgery then it helps make sure blood is clotting normally to avoid complications during the procedure.
  • Some people may need this test if they have bleeding or clotting disorder symptoms

And symptoms may include:

  • Unexplained heavy bleeding
  • The heavy menstrual period in women
  • Leg pains or tenderness
  • Redness or red streaks on the legs
  • Rapid heartbeat.
What does high-activated partial thromboplastin indicate?

It means that blood is clotting too slowly, which can be due to the following:

  • Parenteral administration of heparin.
  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation.
  • Liver disease.
  • Circulating anticoagulants.
  • Vitamin K deficiency
What does low-activated partial thromboplastin indicate?
  • APTT is usually lowered in acute haemorrhagic conditions.
  • The lower range indicates a higher chance of getting blood clots
  • Pregnant women are at higher risk of miscarriage with low APTT.
