What is Uremia?

Prerenal azotemia( Uremia )  is an abnormally high level of nitrogen end products of protein and amino acid metabolism  in the blood as a result of kidney failure Azotemia refers to high levels of urea .

Uremia commonly develops with chronic renal failure or may be with acute-renal failure .Since in Uremia failure of kidney to filter nitrogen waste products properly leads to high level of nitrogen wastes in blood.

The chief cause of uremia is kidney damage in case of – high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, glomerulonephritis and sometimes due to blockage of urine because of stones.

What are the causes of high urea?

Conditions in which urea are high:

Damage to the kidney (due to glomerulonephritis)
• Hypertension
• Diabetes mellitus
• Enlarged prostate
• Blockage of urine due to stone

What are the symptoms of high urea?

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Fatigue
• Anorexia
• Weight loss
• Muscle cramps
• Pruritus
• Change in mental status
• Thirst and swelling
• Decreased urine production
• Pain in abdomen

What are the complications of uremia?

• Seizure

• Coma

• Cardiac arrest

• Spontaneous bleeding can occur (gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding)

Can uremia be cured?

The ultimate treatment for uremia is dialysis. Initiation of dialysis is indicated when signs or symptoms of uremia (eg, nausea, vomiting, volume overload, hyperkalemia (severe acidosis) are present and are not treatable.

Tests performed for the diagnosis of uremia are:

• Serum calcium and phosphorus to evaluate the GFR
• Blood urea nitrogen and Creatinine
• Serum potassium, phosphate
