What is a hydrocele?

The hydrocele is defined as the accumulation of the fluid within the testis or fluid-filled sac surrounding the testicles due to this there occurs swelling of the scrotum (loose bag of skin underneath the penis).

It is the disease of the testis (male reproductive organ).

The disease usually occurs on one side of the testis but can also affect both sides.

How many types of hydrocele?

There are different types of hydrocele and are as follows

• Primary hydrocele:

In this type of hydrocele, there occurs painless enlargement in the scrotum especially on the affected side.

• Secondary hydrocele:

This type of hydrocele occurs when there occurs inflammation or a neoplasm in the testis.

There are other two major types of hydrocele:

• Communicating hydroceles.

• Noncommunicating hydroceles.

Which age group is more affected due to hydrocele?

• Hydrocele is a disease of the male reproductive organ.

• Hydrocele commonly occurs more in male infants.

• The frequency of incidence decreases with increasing age.

What are the causes of hydrocele?

• Mainly the babies who are born prematurely have a higher risk of developing hydrocele.

• Scrotal injury.

•Infection including sexually transmitted infection.

Newborn infant’s hydrocele causes:

•Inflammation or injury of the testicles or epididymis.

• Fluid around the area.

What are the signs and symptoms of hydrocele?

• Testicles are painless but sometimes pain may present.

• Swollen testicles.

• Testicles feel like a water balloon.

• Discomfort.

How to investigate hydrocele?

• Physical examination of the patient.

• Family history of the patient.

• Ultrasound.

What are the complications of a hydrocele?

• Infection or tumor can occur which leads to sperm production or function.

• Inguinal hernia.

• Injury to the scrotum.

• Blood clots after surgery.

How to treat hydrocele?

• The hydrocele is not a dangerous disease.

• They need treatment when infection occurs in it.

• Hydrocele due to an inguinal hernia is treated with surgery.

• Hydrocelectomy is done if the fluid is not treated self for many months.
