Bruxism is a condition that causes people to grind, clench, or gnash their teeth, often involuntarily which can lead to wear down of the teeth. Clenching of the teeth usually puts pressure on the muscles, tissues and other structures around the jaw. Bruxism that happens while a person is awake is more common, but bruxism that happens during sleep has been studied more.

 
 

What is bruxism?

Bruxism is defined as excessive grinding of teeth or clenching of the jaw. Bruxism can affect individuals of any age from children to elderly depending upon the cause. Children grind their teeth mainly during sleep as compared to waking hours. Males and females both are affected by bruxism.

Bruxism is of two types:

There are two main types of bruxism

-One that occurs during sleep and is known as sleep bruxism.

-Second, that occurs during wakefulness is known as awake bruxism.

What causes sleep bruxism?

Sleep bruxism, also known as nocturnal tooth grinding during sleep. Although the cause of bruxism is unknown, it may occur due to anxiety, stress, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, caffeine, sleep apnea, snoring and fatigue.

Can bruxism be cured?

Bruxism has no particular cure. But medicine helps in reduce symptoms and improve sleep quality for people experiencing bruxism.
