Damage to the lower portion of the tube that connects the mouth and stomach causes barrett's oesophagus. It is usually the result of repeated exposure to stomach acid. It’s most often diagnosed in people with long-term gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

 

 

 

What is Barrett syndrome?

It is a disorder in which the oesophagus lining is replaced by tissue which is similar to the lining of the intestine. About 10% to 15% of people with chronic GERD may have Barrett’s oesophagus.
