Assisted conception
The following methods are available for assisted conception.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI): A fine catheter is inserted through the cervix into the uterus to place a sperm sample directly into the uterus.
In vitro fertilization (IVF): The sperm and egg are collected and brought together in a lab. The fertilized egg grows for 3 to 5 days. Then the embryo is placed in the woman’s uterus.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI): A single sperm is injected into an egg for fertilization during an IVF procedure.
Sperm or egg donation: sperm or eggs can be received from a donor.
GIFT (gamete intrafallopian transfer) and ZIFT (zygote intrafallopian transfer): The sperm and egg are collected, brought together in a lab, and placed in a fallopian tube. In GIFT, the sperm and eggs are placed into the fallopian tube. In ZIFT, a fertilized egg is placed into the tube at 24 hours.
Lifestyle changes may help
There are a few steps to increase your chances of achieving pregnancy:
-Increase frequency of sex. Have intercourse every day or every other day beginning at least four days before ovulation it increases your chances of getting your spouse pregnant.
-Have sex when fertilization is possible. A woman become pregnant during ovulation — which occurs in the middle of the menstrual cycle.
-Avoid the use of lubricants. Ask your doctor about sperm-safe lubricants.
