Understanding Schizoaffective Disorder

A schizophrenic person has delusions (strange beliefs not based in reality), lack of emotions, difficulty in speech and communication and hallucinations (hearing voices) .
Symptoms begin in early adulthood between age group-16 to 30 years of age.

Some of evidences regarding its cause exist such as – imbalance in brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine which regulate moods.

Schizoaffective disorder may be passed from parents to children.

Schizoaffective disorder person exhibits following symptoms –

• Delusions, hallucinations –fixed beliefs
• Strange thoughts
• Irritable behavior
• Suicidal tendency
• Energy changes
• Disturbance in sleep
• Difficulty in concentration
• Loss of appetite

Schizoaffective disorders are usually confused with depression and Bipolar disorders.

There are 3 types  of Schizophrenia:

Paranoid schizophrenia has symptoms –
• Anxiety
• Anger
• False beliefs that others are trying to harm you or your loved ones

Disorganized schizophrenia has symptoms –

• Childlike behavior
• Problems thinking and explaining your ideas clearly
• less emotion

Catatonic schizophrenia has symptoms –

• Lack of activity
• Rigid muscles and posture
• Not responding much to other people
Schizoaffective disorder is a combination of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. But schizophrenia does not include mania/depression.
