Do you spend most of your time sitting on the chair?
Our body is designed for regular movement but most of us spend their time on chairs working all day long in front of the computer. But do we all know the bad effects of too much sitting on our health?
Let us see what happens to our body!
“Prolonged sitting has been shown to disrupt metabolic function resulting in increased plasma triglyceride levels, decreased levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and decreased insulin sensitivity” which can lead to following conditions:
Sitting down for long hours causes abdominal contents to compress, that slows down digestion. That decreased muscle contractions occurs with prolonged, immobile sitting slows the clearance of fat from the blood stream and decreases the effect of insulin leading to Diabetes.
Standing may tense your abdominal muscles, which go unused when you sit, ultimately leading to weak abdomen causes sluggish digestion which can lead to cramping, bloating, heartburn, and constipation, as well dysbiosis in your gastrointestinal tract, a condition caused by microbial imbalances in your body.
Sitting at a desk reduces a person’s energy expenditure because the body’s major muscle groups aren’t being utilized and calorie burning is minimized. Over an extended period of time this can lead to weight gain and in severe cases obesity.
Some rheumatic diseases like osteoarthritis are the result of “wear and tear” to the joints, like that of excessive amounts of sitting. Your hips also suffer from prolonged sitting, becoming tight and limited in range of motion because they are rarely extended.
• Sitting puts more pressure on your spine than standing, and the toll on your back health is even worse if you’re sitting in front of a computer.
• Strained Neck and Shoulders: It’s common to hold your neck and head forward while working at a computer. This can lead to strains to your cervical vertebrae which can lead to neck strain, sore shoulders and back.
Varicose Veins: Prolonged sitting time leads to poor circulation in legs, which can cause swelling in your ankles, varicose veins, and blood clots known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Long hour sitting is a life threatened, you may die earlier from any cause if you sit for long stretches at a time.
As far as backache, impact on internal organs due to prolong sitting is also the matter of worry. Sitting for long hours causes body to burn less fat, leads to poor blood circulation resulting fatty acid to clog the heart. Sitting also raises risk of diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
